Ending Wheel Torque Confusion I think

Wheel Torque Confusion

From my Original Chevrolet P30 Forward Control 1985 Chevrolet Owners Manual.

Take note.......There are Two P30s.........One is a P30 Motorhome Cassis and is not to be confused with the other
and if you do then according to some postings on here you are under torqueing your wheel nuts so Caution. is the word.

Wheels without Clamping Rings.....(No mention of #of studs or Diameter of studs) 120 ft lbs.

Wheels with Clamping Rings EXCEPT MOTORHOMES  140 ft lbs

Motorhome  with Clamping Rings                              180 ft lbs

You decide.

What would help is if someone would post what a clamping ring looks like.  Not having a P30 chassis, I have no clue what a clamping ring is.

hi, GM;s have a rim plate(clamping ring) that goes on against the rim before the nuts go on the studs to hold the rim on (sorry got no pics)

This is a wheel clamping ring. As mentioned, it goes between the outside rim and the lug nuts.

The clamping plate uses coned lugs and without the plate uses flat faced lugs. I have seen coned lugs used on flat faced rims! NOT good!!!

Just a little add on.......The Motorhome chassis  is simply called a  Motorhome P chassis  (not really P30)

Sorry.....The MH Version is the P32. Now we can find parts. :)

You will find it goes either way, sometimes it is a P30 and sometimes it is a P32. All depends on what you are looking for and who you are talking to. I think all of the later GM's were P32's but the early ones were in a grey area.

Good morning, Sleeth; 

     Actually, it gets even worse.  I have also seen the additional designations of the Motor Home Chassis version being called the P37 and the P32-52. 

     Yes, it can be confusing, and a real challenge at times to order the correct part.  In my efforts so far, the main designation under which the parts guys' listings show the vehicle is under their GMC P30 and P32 headings, but sometimes those parts really are for the trucks, and the motor home versions can be different.  Ask them to look thoroughly through the part description to see if there is another version of that part listed and available also.  That may be a motor home version.

P30 is a series.  There is a also a P20 series used for Class C rigs (A few people here have them)
P32 is the motor home chassis (no cab included)
P42 is the Bread or UPS box truck style chassis (some have cabs [box truck], some are a fwd control chassis like a UPS truck)

GM uses a model code to designate length within a version e.g:
Motorhome chassis (P32): P30832, P31132, P31432, P31832, P32032
Box truck (van) chassis (P42): P30842, P31042, P31442, P31842

In later years they, and Workhorse, also used other designations like P37 and  P52

You will see this P32 vs P42 designation difference referenced in the GM Service manuals.
