Is there a trick to putting water in fresh water tank for dry camping?  I am told hot water tank holds approximately 10 gal.  Does the hot water tank fill first and then the fresh tank fills.  I keep wondering if I fill the tank and then the hot water tank takes ten gallons from the fresh tank.  I just want to have as much water as I can when I dry camp.  Not sure how the system works or if there is a trick to fill the hot water heater and then have a complete full amount in the fresh water reservoir.

My hot water tank is 5 gal.
Fill your fresh water tank, make sure your pump is on.
The pump should fill the water heater

Open the hot water faucet to get the air out or the water heater won't fill. All so  make sure the water heater is not bypassed

Do yourself a favor a spend 125.00 a put a on demand propane. Get rid of the 70s

125.00? All the on demand systems I have seen were like 450.00! Unless you buy one of those units that hangs from a tree and then rig the plumbing every time you stop. I want to stop, turn on the hot water and have it right now. :)ThmbUp

Agree. With a fresh fill you do have to purge the air in the lines and tank.
As for the 'On Demand', very high on my to do list. Not sure if I will go with a surface mount or one that fits the existing hole.
However, $150.00? Realistically between $400.00 and $750.00.

Where are you getting them for that price?????????????? I'll take 2 !

I will send pic tomorow, had one in my home for years. Now in my rv for 2 years. You do not need a huge unit for a large home. EBay 110 -140 and some simple plumbing

RickHolz

Why hang it in tree, fasten it in the proane compatment

E-Bay 110-140 come back to 1858 listings and I didn't see anything like a heater. Can you be a bit more specific. I would love to get one at that price, and see how you installed it.

OK, I think this will get people closer. Let us know if it is a different group of heaters.

Pretty sure he meant the price range on Ebay was $110 to $140

Using the Ebay search term "on demand water heater rv" returns this: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR1.TRC0.A0.H0.Xon+demand+water+heater+rv.TRS0&_nkw=on+demand+water+heater+rv&_sacat=0

And there are some in that lower price range.

I'm going to be dry camping for a week starting a week from tomorrow so I've got a similar situation:

I've put in a new 42 gallon water tank to replace my original one since it was not working. I'm not sure my hot water heater will work (and frankly the tank will be used mostly for drinking, cooking and washing hands so I can boil water if I really need hot water) , but I bought myself a on demand propane shower (this one, but I got a refurbished one from the dealer directly: https://www.amazon.com/Eccotemp-L5-Portable-Tankless-Outdoor/dp/B000TXOJQ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466278720&sr=8-1&keywords=l5+propane+shower)

Anyway, onto the need for plenty of water: I'm also taking between 2-4 extra 7 gallon water jugs to fill my water tank in case it gets low and one to use for my shower. This way I am assured to have plenty of water.

Just one way to think about a solution to this issue.....

Thank you all for the tips.  Much appreciated.
