I got a 2 inch diameter generic brand from J.C. Whitney for $30, and have been happy with it. There weren't any cheap analog ones that only read to 4000 or 5000 rpm. I got the type that would read to 8000 rpm, and there is a switch on the back to tell it whether the engine had 4, 6, or 8 cylinders. I set it for 4 cylinders. The result is that at highway speed, it reads 3/4 of the way around the dial, showing 6000 rpm. One wire connects a ground, another lead goes to the same circuit that feeds the radio, and the 3rd lead connects to the side of the ignition coil that is Not connected to the ignition resistor. The hardest part of the install was finding a good spot to put extra gauges.
My ignition system has points, and yours would have the electronic ignition, but I think the coil gets the same type of signal to the terminal that is Not connected to the 12v through the ignition resistor.
There are also inexpensive tachometers that connect to an ignition wire -inductively-. I have one of those for my 87 Chevy van, cost $44, and its readout is digital. Also works fine. I chose a 2 inch guage to match the other gauges I added. denison

Mine is the dash mount type, located to the driver's left, by the corner windshield post.  It could be just as easily mounted to the driver's right, in front of the windshield center post.  Or, on my arm.  Or, my wife could hold it in front of me whenever I want to look at it. Or, I could have it projected onto the window, or...

Mine is centered, below the radio. Picture in my album on page 7 or 8 of the pictures, densions 72 d22t, you can see if mounted in a wooden plate. Right behind that spot in the dashboard is a radio-sized rectangle, so I only had to cut the leatherette. Very easy to install, and easy to lift that plate forward when I want to work behind it. denison
