Hi,

I'm new to the message boards.  We just bought a 1976 Winnebago Brave.  It has a Travel-Awn 5000.  Does anyone have a manual for it, or know how to open it?

Thanks!

I don't have a Travel-Awn but, my awining is only a year old and most of them operate in the same fashion.  If you have that rod with the hook on the end, does it also have a ring on the other?  The ring is used to slip over the end of the lever, which may be marked, "open" and "close" on the end of the awning where the awning roller goes into the braces which support the open awning come together.

Once you have the safety straps undone, you flip the lever to "open" and pull it open with the hooked end inserted into the small loop on the end of the strap.

If that doesn't work, utter 2 swear words first, then try again.

And we have the manual for this in the Member Area too!  :)

I don't have a rod for the awning.  I was able to contact the A & E company and they emailed the instructions for it.  Although, I don't have the rod they talk about, I'm hoping to find something that will work instead.
And I have a feeling, I'll utter more than 2 swear words before this is over.  lol  And probably down a few beers along the way!  lol
Thanks for your help :)

The rod can be easily made from 1/4, or preferrably 3/16", steel about 3' long.  Just bend one end at a right angle about 1" for pulling down the strap and make a loop in the other end.

Sob, there is also a hole in the end of each top cap for pulling down with the rod.  Comes in handy if you can't get to the strap!

That's a nice feature.  My Simplicity awning doesn't have those. - Sob

We got the awning to work beautifully.  That's a good idea about making the rod.  We were able to do it without using a rod, but I'd like to have one for future use anyway.
I'm already dying to go camping again!  lol   Sure does beat a pop up and tent. :)

Jenna - one note : always close your awning slowly using the strap and rod.  Never allow it to close raidly by letting go . It can break the main spring unit . - Sea Hag

Mr. T

An old timer taught me a nifty little trick.  After you have your awning fully extended and locked, drop one corner to direct rain runoff.  This will keep you from walking through puddles at the front door. :)
