The old Hot water heater didn't work so, the PO installed an electric one.  I want to remove the old gas lines and seal them off.  I may be doing the same for the fridge soon.  How do I do this safely?  - Sob

Sob, This is a very easy fix. First shut off the tanks supply valves. Then open a source to allow any residual pressure out. Then locate the point in the main line where you want to terminate the line by finding a threaded joint where you can disconnect the supply pipe. You can buy pipe thread caps at any hardware store in the plumbing sections. Apply Teflon tape to the end of the pipe, 2 or 3 rounds is enough, and screw on a cap tightly. Always check for leaks by re-pressurizing the line and mix a small amount of dish detergent in some water and put in a small trigger sprayer. Spray the new cap and surrounding area with the soap solution looking for any sign of bubbles. If everything is OK you are done. Oh yeah, I would refrain from smoking while performing this task.lol  Lefty

Thanks Lefty,

With all the posts about LP leak concerns, it sure is worth taking the extra time to check the work!  - Sob

Don't you use Yellow tape on gas lines?

Hi Booboo, I have always used regular Teflon tape. there may be a special tape that you are supposed to use for LP fittings, I don't know. If so I would definitely recommend it. Can't be too safe!! Lefty
