RV via Barge

A few years ago I worked close enough to the Tennessee river that I could go to the local boat ramp and sit at the picnic tables and eat my lunch.  On different occasions I would see this bizarre spectacle of barges loaded down with RVs, and people out under their canopies in lawnchairs enjoying the ride.  It looked like a good idea to me and I was wondering if they still did this.  I could see some disadvantages if there was a medical emergency or something, but I imagine that would be the case on any type cruise on the river.  Here's a couple of older articles that I found on this: http://www.cincinnati.com/travel/stories/062799_barge.html & http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4182/is_19990518/ai_n10128943/

I've seen both RV's on barges and RV's on trains.... think i've seen it on the travel channel... pretty cool idea....

Dad worked on the Delta Queen steamboat as an engineer and had run into those guys several times on the Mississippi and Tennessee rivers. The barges all have full hookups and part of the trip includes going ashore in several of the river towns along with just cruising on the river
