Fiberglass Siding on top of Aluminum Siding

Siding on Lauren and T.J.'s Winnebago was just put on over the old metal siding. Yep we finally had it home long enough to do some repairs on her and figured out all the previous owner did was take some new fiberglass siding removed all the window trim and body trim used some type of glue and glued the fiberglass right over the old siding. Cut out the windows, door and wheel wells and put the trim back on. Also in terms of the interior paneling he took out most of the cabinets paneled the inside right over the old paneling replaced all the window trim etc and then use longer screws to hold every thing in place. It looks pretty good but as you get to understand Winnies a little better the workman ship could have been a little better.

Very interesting. Where would one acquire the sheets and how expensive do you think they are? Could be I nice makeover?

Hi I looked at all the specs they supplied but nowhere could i find how much this stuff weigh es  Its necc to know due to maximum weight limit is not much more than empty weight .  Would need to know weight of 1 piece of the thinest 1ft x 8ft  to figure total   Frank

Dad and I took a good look at LJ/TJs rig.  Its Beautiful!!!  After some poking around, it appeared to us that it was also stuck over the old siding.  But in the back left corner near the bumper there is a piece that is slightly exposed, and it looked like maybe they stuck a thin sheet of wood on the rig first, then stuck the fiberglass over that?

Also if you look at the bottom trim, its a U Channel, it looks like they opened it out a bit on the back side to accommodate the new thickness. 

Whoever did it was very meticulous and did a fantastic job!

Filon is made by Kemlite Corporation, which is the largest frp manufacturer in the world and are located in Illinois.  Filon is a durable semi-rigid gel coated exterior FRP [Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester] resin material.  It comes in 3 shades of white and 1 shade of gray which the color is all through the product.  Our color is the most popular color used in the RV industry, Polar White.  The most common grades come in .040 and .060 thickness and in 8' wide rolls up to 500' long. 

The Filoplate gel coated surface is highly scratch, abrasion and dent resistant with excellent weathering characteristics.  The maximum allowable bend radius is 7" or greater. 

Maintenance requires washing with liquid detergents and if you wish to wax, you can use automotive or marine waxes or use cleaners developed for use on fiberglass boats, showers and tubs. 

All of your high end RV's use Filon siding.  I requested a technical data sheet from Kemlite and they mailed me a sample card of Filon and lots of great information.  I've also made numerous phone calls to the factory techs and asked many questions.  Other sources of information was acquired from Walt's RV and Mr. Bob Evans, a veteran Teardrop builder and High School shop teacher in San Bernardino, CA who's students build Teardrops as a class project.
