Build Winnebago Tow Dolly

Seems a lot of us want to tow a Winnebago. So why can't we design a tow dolly that we can put a Winnebago on and tow it behind a truck. Anybody got any ideas. I was thinking maybe an I beam as an axle with wheels welded to it and a trailer hitch?? Hm? What do ya think.

heres an idea..take a towtruck and take the hydrolic system and the lift(not the hook) the part that picks up the front tires..weld the slide to the frame and put the operatn system in the back..if you install heavy duty hydrolic lines.it should work..do the work yourself and save money..same way they put a tow system on pickups...

I must say the idea of flat towing or using a dolly to pull an RV scares me a bit.    Too much weight and not enough braking power, but I suppose a brake buddy could be used.

I would feel better to see maybe a heavier goose neck trailer with brakes.       

BTW, there use to be a picture on here with a truck flat towing a winnie.

Yep! I've got the picture. If I knew how to post a picture on this spot I could post it. What about taking a front axle with disc brakes off an old Winnebago....cut the axle in half widen it a bit and weld it to the I beam. Figure a way to get the disc brakes on the axle to work. Maybe with a type of hydraulic hose.

We might as well start our own winne wrecking yard complete with tow truck for member's only. any time a winne comes up for sale for parts or complete we should buy it up and put it in our own personal stash!!

I've been thinking about this the last day or so.

One could just build a heavy Tow Dolly with Surge Brakes.  Hm?

It would seem to me that towing a MH behind a truck is like the tail wagging the dog.
As for putting surge brakes on the dolly, I'd use electric brakes  instead...especially going down mountains.

I just wrote Les Miller Design and asked his opinion on this subject. Ya got to remember we're not going to be running down the highway at 70 miles an hour. The idea is to come up with a  way to move one of these rigs down the road behind a pickup safely at about 50 and no your not going to stop like your driving a Escort your going to have 11,000 lbs behind you. But we should be able to do it safely.

TJ, Yes I can build you a tow dolly to accommodate your load but there is a problem on your end. I have to build the unit with a class 5 receiver with a 2-5/16” ball to be adequate for your needs. They do not make class 5 hitches for ½ ton pickups and only a few ¾ tons with a limit of 10k load. You need a minimum of a 1 ton pickup to pull a load over 10k safely. You have to go with a class 5 hitch for a load over 10k.



After all that a ball park for the dolly would be $2400.

a couple of the heavy towing companies i've seen while doing the fireman thing have used a lift that lifts from the strait axle not the wheels
