Hi,

I went from the stock 8.00 x 16.5 tires (27.5" height) to a 9.50 x 16.5 tire that is 30.75" tall.

60 mph (actual) now reads 53 or 54 mph on the speedometer and the tach reads 300+ rpm less than it did at that speed before.

These wider and taller tires fit on the stock rims, there is still ample room between the duals and they have lots of clearance in the wheel wells.

While this is not as effective as installing an overdrive trans, or changing diff gears, we noticed improved fuel economy and the ability to cruise faster without really reving the engine.

There is a real improvement in ride quality, too -much smoother and quieter inside.

Jay,I will never forget the day I drove my 1970 F-17 home with the new 9.50x16.5 tires. What a difference.Engine speed much lower. The standard tire size is 7.50x16 on the early Ford chassis like the F-17 & F-19's.
