I have been calling around trying to find someone who carries front wheel studs for 17" 5 lug bud rims on my 72 Chieftain. (Drum breaks)

I did a search on this message board and some one seamed to have found them, but did not say exactly where. NAPA seams to be clueless.

Looks like a 2000 International bus may be the same type.

I have not taken one off of my rig yet and only know that the diameter is about 3/4 inch, left hand thread. Would rather search around more before going to extremes.

Thanks

Tried some numbers from the parts book and found this at the NAPA site: http://www.napaonline.com/NOLPPSE/(S(e2e3xz2ukduusiqzqvzeeq2s))/Detail.aspx?R=BK_6411048_0184408092

There were a lot of choices in the parts book so I don't know if it's correct.  This one of those parts that a counter person would have to "match up" to the old one.

When the Ark (72 Futura, Dodge chassis, 5 lug Budd wheels, same as yours) went  to dry dock at Tom and Maryann's house a couple of Christmas's ago, we had to replace 4 of them on the front drums...this was when they were still living in Virginia.

I don't remember the name of the hardware store, but it had them in stock, and even had the ones for the rear end, plus the lug nuts...so I bought them.  They weren't all that expensive as I recall either.

Ask Tom for the name of the shop (Tom in Florida, aka Slantsixness), since he has nearly a photographic memory and probably knows the name of the place.  Its in Fredricksburg, VA.  I had spares, but I gave them to the new owner of the Ark...otherwise I'd give them to you.  If he remembers the name of the store, maybe you can call them and see if they still have them, and if they could ship them to you.  As I recall, they knew what Budd wheels were, and even asked me if it was the left hand threads or the right hand threads I needed.

Good luck!

Kev

I usually just knock one out and take it down to NAPA. If they can't look them up by vehicle make, they can size them up if they have an old stud.

Steve,

According to the '72 Dodge Motor Home Chassis Parts Catalog, these are the OEM (Dodge / Mopar) manufacturer's Part numbers for your Drum Studs/Wheel Bolts - most any parts place that carries studs should be able to cross reference to these numbers:  (probably from a book under their counter - not the computer on top of it.) They were used on Dodge Trucks from "69-'80.
Front RH = 2907 740
Front LH = 2907 741 ( also found NSN 5307-00-689-4187 listed for this Stud)
Rear RH = 1272 771
Rear LH = 1272 772

I know  Alretta Truck Parts Inc has them, but,  as Denison suggested in an earlier "stud" thread, most any truck tire/brake shop should have them in stock.

Good Luck

Lane Auto Parts, Fredericksburg VA. That's where we got Kev's studs a couple years ago. (they've been there for a zillion years...)

There are Dorman part numbers for both the RH and LH front, and rear 5 lug Studs.

Anybody got an old Dorman cross reference? It will cross the original 2907 XXX and 1272 XXX part numbers.

Almost any auto parts store that has been around awhile (at least 25 years) should have them in the old Dorman stock drawers.

They should be common standard parts, but the studs and the nuts. I saw boxes of them the last time I was in a tire store that handled trucks - light trucks and 18 wheelers. That store was in Fairfa VA.. They had them in right- and left-hand threads, and in a couple of different lengths, along with the corresponding nuts, inner and out. I would presume any real tire store dealing with trucks would have them. I would want to take an old one in to match though.
I know my Winnie has 6 different 'nuts' for the studs; (those for the front in L & R, the inner ones for the rear axle in L & R, and the outer rear, in L & R). So I got a supply of decent extras last time I harvested parts from a junkyard. If the nuts are cleaned up, you will see a dim 'left' stamped on the Left Handed ones.
As far as I know the studs on all 5 lug hubs are simply a press fit in the hub/drum. I.E. with a suitable 'back' support, a sledge hammer removes the old ones, & you hammer in the replacements.

I found the studs, Unfortunately, The NAPA parts receipt. I saved in order to post back to this message for peoples future reference did not have the part number I found on the website on it !!!!! ARG !!!!!. The part number below matches the measurements on my wheel stud the closest to my actual measurements of the studs I pulled from my drums.

Installation:
I banged the studs in from the inside as far as I could, then put the drum and wheel
back on, then sinched each one down till they "creaked". I did not have a press, and if you try to bang them in to hard, the drum will separate from the spool.

Now, when driving down the road, it does not seam like I am running over a cat !!!! each wheel revolution. LOL. To be fair to my Dad, HE drove it 1500 miles like that all the way to Houston. Poor Sole !!! LOL

Napa "Truck Parts" store in Houston had them.
