Windy Hills Recreation Area Campground, Tonto National Forest, AZ

This is one of MANY "free" camping areas at the 3 million acre Tonto National Forest in Arizona.

Since we plan on staying at many more here in future years, I'll just evaluate this one.

Okay, cost.  To use any recreation area in Tonto National Forest, you need to buy a daily Tonto Pass...but it covers camping, etc.  They are 6 dollars a day, 3 a day if you have the Golden Passport senior pass, and if you have the Golden Passport, you can get a year Tonto Pass for 15 bucks. 

The campground we are staying at, in the Windy Hills Recreation Area, is right across the street, State Highway 188, from the Tonto National Monument...ancient Indian cliff dwelling ruins.

Views are panoramic and amazing.  Tall green mountains on one side, high mesas on another, Roosevelt lake on another...just beautiful.

There is potable water, where you can fill your freshwater tanks.

There are also bathrooms and a shower house, and an onsite camp host.

Sites are level pull throughs, with picnic tables and fire rings.

This is semi primative camping, with no electric, water, or sewer hookups.

Its boondocking in a state park type atmosphere, and its amazingly awesome!

I highly recommend it, and the whole of Tonto National Forest as well.
