Driver's seat loose

Hi all

  The driver and passenger front seats in our 88 Elandal are a bit loose.  They just wiggle a bit, just enough to be a pain while driving.  Is this normal?  I am wondering if it is because they are made to turn around?  Is there a secret trick to stop the wiggling?? Thought I better double check before I borrow a welder and fixem good LOL!

what we did with ours was use two nuts on the bolts that held the seat down and it never rocked again but still swivels.

You need to determine if the play is in the support shaft itself or in the pedestal mounts.  Since both are doing it, it doesn't sound like the mounts, but you don't know until you check.

Typically, there are 4 bolts which mount the base to the floor as well as the pedestal to the seat bottom.  Since your RV is newer than any I've had, it may be more.

Start by checking your main mounting bolts for tightness.

If, after they are verified as being tight, wiggle the seat around to see if it's in the pedestal tube.  It may be at the top or it may be where it enters the floor base.  Mine did the same thing and it was that the tube was loose in the base.  Luckily, there was a screw which could be tightened to take out the play.  Maybe there is a worn, hard rubber or plastic sleeve bushing which needs replaced.

The seats run on dry ball bearings like a lazy susan.  They wear out over time.  Our passenger seat rocks quite a bit, and that is even with me tightening the bolt that goes to the bearings as tight as I possibly could...but then, the passenger seat is also my computer desk seat when parked, and gets a lot of use...lol!

I was thinking of replacing the ball bearings, which are loose when you take it apart, with a larger size, and greasing the heck out of them.  It might help!  Just haven't had time to do it yet.

Good observation, Kevin.  So, from a cost effective stand point, perhaps a new set of original bearings could be ordered or maybe even a good, used set could be obtained from a salvage yard as well.

I am going to look at them closer this weekend, weather permitting.  Hope to get some photos too.  Thanks for the info.

Good call, Frank!  A good bike shop will have all kinds of loose bearings for sale in a variety of calibers on the cheap!
