Hi Denison, and others,

As you may remember, we have a Chevy chassis 78 Minnie Winnie.  I'm currently researching the viability of converting to LPG, and a few people (all of whom apparently have some experience of American classic cars) have said that our engine looks like a Ford, not a Chevy.  If it is, then could this mean that at some point the engine we thought we had (6.2litre V8) has been changed?  It seems unlikely it would have had a Ford engine originally?  Does anyone know what I should look for in a Ford or a Chevy engine to identify it one way or the other?

Many thanks, once again, for all your help,

Hannah

Being a dodge V8 owner, I do not know any definite way to tell a ford from a Chevy v8 - I would know if I was looking at a 350, but thats about it. The last Ford v8s I worked on were flatheads, in early 50s Ford pickups. Could you post pictures of the engine, taken from the back or sides, by removing the engine cover? If you cant do that, try finding an internet site having a picture like your engine, and tell us the location of the image. You could also search on ebay. You can go to the altavista search engine, and searching for "images", ask it to find +Ford +v8 or +Chev* +V8; things like that. there is a vintage chevy truck site, called www.stovebolt.com that might have pictures of the motors. And of course in the albums on this site you can find pictures of the tops of the 318 and 413 and 440 v8s. Not sure about the 360s. See if you can find the firing order, stamped on the intake manifold. good luck denison

the chevy firing order is the same as the 440 18436572 , i get confused on the 6.2 liter i thought that was the diesal ?, the 350 was 5.7 or the 400 6.0 ? if it is the 454 it will have big square valve covers , my ford truck (yuck) was a 351w with the dist. in the front in 77 they would have used a 351 or a 400 m for modified in the trucks if you have a chevy chassis it would have been a nightmare for someone to put a ford motor and tranny in it ...like welding motor mounts in fabercating transmission mounts etc. not a very easy change over concidering up until 6 or 7 years ago a used chevy motors were very plentiful and cheap ... I agree it would probably be alot of work to change from a GM to Ford and the modifications would be obvious . there should be some casting numbers on the side of the block that should at least Identify the manufacturer - You might be able to tell quickly by looking at engine componants such as vacume switches ,pvc , distributor ,ect - if there are any OEM devices on it chevy would be AC Delco  and I think Ford would be Auto lite or motorcraft . I don't know why someone would repace a GM with Ford but thats just me - Sea Hag
