While reading many posts on this site I have seen references to lug nut torques of 400 lb ft.

When changing wheels on my 85 chieftain I inquired with a local Led Schwab and they advised about 165 lb ft.

The 165 seems much more reasonable than 400.  Seems like a wheel stud would snap off at 400 lb ft.

Thoughts. .......???

The best I can come up with is 5/8 studs 200 ft/lbs and 5/8 flanged 350ft/lbs.

It does seem high to me also but it is on a couple charts I have found and a couple more are showing 200-250?

Go with what the manufacturer says but make sure they are dry threads.

Well according to the chassis manual the p30 chassis with 5/8 studs requires 180 lb ft.  Think I will stick with that.

180 is correct. The references to 300 to 400 fb torques are on 22 1/2" wheels which have huge lugs

The Dodge chassis M-300- M-500 are tightened to 425 ft lbs. As referenced in the Dodge Chassis Service Manual, chapter 22, section 3. They are done in three stages. First to 200 ft lbs, then 325 ft lbs, then finally to 425 ft lbs. They recommend tightening the inner dual nuts to slightly higher than 425 ft lbs. So that they will not loosen when you try to loosen the outer nuts.

The GM P-30 chassis are tightened to 90-120 ft lbs for the front (8 lug singles), and 140 ft lbs for the rear (8 lug duals). The only exception is if you have 10 lug wheels with the 5/8" studs... those get tightened to 180 ft lbs  ('79-'94 Chevy/GMC Chassis Maintenance & Service Manual... Chapter 3, Section 15-A)
I reserve the right to reject your reality and substitute my own...

yeah the 180 are good for the 10 lugs. and you dont need a torque multipliers for this a normal torque wrench is just good.

just retightend mine after 2000 miles and two on one side and three on the other side had been lost a lot. not loose but i could give them each another complete relevation.

should have done this maybe earlier after changing the wheels.... Do It
