Propane engine fuel conversion

I know that in the early 70's these were added on to Winnebagos because of the high cost of gas at that time.Right now the price of propane is half that of gas.I want one for my 300-6 Ford motor.If anyone knows where one of these kits can be found please post a message about it.

I had the whole setup that came off of my 80 itasca. I tried to sell it cheap but had no takers. It went to the scrap yard a week ago Sat along with a bunch of other stuff I'd been saving for a very long time. Check ebay, some are listed every now and then.

My very dear friend Tom (Slantsixness) made the statement that Propane doesn't have the same energy per volume as gasoline, and ergo you would have about a 20-30 percent drop in fuel economy if you switched to propane...the same or even more if you switched to pure or almost pure ethanol...and after much research, Tom is right!!!
 
However, if propane is half the cost of gasoline and STAYS that way, it WOULD be economical to switch to propane...lets say your fuel economy drops 20 percent...at half the cost of fuel, you save 30 percent!  If the economy drops 30 percent, you save 20!  It is win-win!!!

But I would suggest holding off on a full propane conversion for now...propane and gasoline usually run neck and neck in cost (like milk), and the cost of propane now might be artificially low.  This is a very strange time for fuel costs, and propane SHOULD be almost as expensive as gasoline. 

Wait a while.

For reference,
The original propane setup required a very very large tank.  Mine is 80 gallons (was a dual use tank).  It pulled "liquid" propane from the tank (seperate tank connection with shutoff valve).    The liquid was "heated" by a converter/regulator.  The heater hoses routed through it.  I never had the carburator portion (PO had discarded it) so it never worked.  I think I even have bits and pieces of the system I removed.  Just be sure to realize it is not as simple as the rest of the propane system in your rig and the normal propane tanks may not work with it.
