Hi,

While spraying PB blaster on my shock mounts of our 1977 Chieftain, I noticed that the block had 440-2 cast into the side. All the literature shows I should have a 440-3. Do I have a wierd engine? Will it make a difference in buying parts?

Thank you,

Greg Miller

I believe that whatever was cast into the block would have been for the rough casting only. As far as I know, the rough castings were the same for the 440-1 and 440-3, and perhaps the 440-2 and -4 as well. The differences would come from the machining operation. I think the 440s in motorhomes in 74 and 75 all had a 440-1 cast into the block, even though they became 440-3s. So maybe by 1976 they had updated the molds somehow, or the motors were being built in a different plant.
Any time you go to buy a new part, it helps to have the old one to take in with you.
