thanks everyone for your help! Now my question of the day! i had my 1988 superchief now for 8 years and never changed the plugs and wires. What would be the best plugs and wires for this 454 chevy? It has too be very resistant to heat also. Should I change my distributor cap also and if yes what type should I get? thanks Again!

I went with Belden Blue Max wires, from Napa.  8mm, and lifetime warranty, and the boots are long enough to protect the wires near the manifold.

I've had the best luck with wires from Aurora Ignition.

You still have a carburator in 88 so a good tuneup would include:

Distributor cap
Rotor
Plugs
Plug Wires
Rarely goes bad but always nice to have a spare coil (secured to dist cap) and electronic ignition module (Inside distributor if I remember correctly).

Additional points to check/set:
Vacuum hoses (time is not kind to them)

Distributor Centrifugal advance is operating freely (affects engine power production)

Distributor Vacuum Advance is working (no holes in diaphram) and operates smoothly (Affects fuel economy). Use handheld vacuum tester to check

Adjust Timing

Set Carburator Idle adjustment screws

EGR Valve is operating properly (can stick open resulting in one big vacuum leak).  Use handheld vacuum tester to check

Cruise Control Vacuum chamber diaphram is not leaking.

To do all this properly you need tools like:
Vacuum gauge
Automotive Test meter with Tach
Timing Light
