Timing marks on 440

THE TIMING AT IDLE FOR THE 79, 440-3 IS 8 BTC. AT 700 RPM
THE TIMING INDICATOR IS LOCATED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF CHAIN CASE COVER, ABOUT 10 OCLOCK POSITION FACEING THE ENG. THE TIMING MARK ON THE DAMPER IS THE LONG MARK.

Just to clarify Hal's answer... the dampener has 4 "slices" in the circumference.  Three of those only go as far as the beveled (front) surface of the dampener; the 4th one is the full width of the dampener.  That is the one that Hal was refering to.

The timming mark on the frount is hard to see from the top - I had to view it from the passenger side wheel well and go back to the top to ajust and recheck .  I recently did some work on the top rear of the engine on my 76 440 and found another  timming mark in the top of the bell housing . there is a hole under the mouting plate for the ignition modual  and a corisponding mark at the top of the hole either right or left depending on year - haven't tried it yet , but did find the procedure in the service manual .  Shur would make things eaiser . I am going to check the ignition advance on my 440. Does anyone have more data points than at 3000 rpm, in particular the mechanical at 1500 2000, and at 2500 rpm?
