I have a 72 D22 Indian with a 413 engine, my concern is the cruise control.  Has anybody had any luck taking the unit up under the left front wheel apart and servicing it, or is there a better option to this problem, maybe a newer after market unit.  Thanks for your help. I have enjoyed the above discussion on mpg. winnebagoguy

Over the years I have installed several aftermarket units in cars.  If you decide to go that route, I would go with a unit that is 100% electric as opposed to a vacuum powered unit.

HOWEVER - you will need to consider that since cars have been computerized for more than 20 years, most aftermarket kits will depend on the cars vehicle speed sensor (VSS) to monitor the vehicle's speed.  Guess what?  Our 1970s chassis don't have these!  This means that you will have to use some other method of tracking speed.  Make sure that any unit you choose supports an alternative method and that you are prepared to make that method work.  This is likely to be your greatest challenge.

All in all, if I could easily get the OEM cruise control to work without too much trouble, I would go that route.  Failing that, I would figure out what speed sensing method the OEM cruise uses and look for an aftermarket unit that can use it.
