Guys,

I need some help, I have just re plumbed my brakes with copper brake pipe and fitted new flexibles at the front.  But before I refil and bleed the system I would like to know what the torque figure is for the Caliper/Flexible banjo bolts.  As usual it's a '73 Brave D19.

Thanks in advance

Ian...

Sorry I don't have a clue. I'm one of those guys who seldom uses a torque
wrench except on engine parts.

Ian: I will try to remember to look it up when I get home this afternoon - but since the torque is on a hollow item, squeezing down on a brass fitting at the end of the brake hose - the flexible- I would estimate a low torque, like 12 ft--lbs, which is about the same as a spark plug should be. Spark plugs are another item that is commonly overtightened.
Your mention of copper brakes lines interested me. In the U.S. I believe brake lines are always made of Bundy tubing, at least by the auto manufacturers. I know there is a brake line material called Kunifer which is an alloy, but havent seen it for sale in the U.S. nor know anything about it. I also know The Bundy tubing doesn't work harden like tubing actually made of copper, and it only corrodes slowly, being tinned inside and out; - which I believe is the reason our federal government -Dept of Transportation- made the requirement - 60 or 70 years ago! You may know all about this, but I found 2 links that were informative:

The attached MS Word file contains the service brakes tightening specs for dodge Motor Home chassis 1972-1975.  Hope that helps.

Dave's,

Thank you very much for the info it is exactly what I was looking for.  Mr Denison I didn't know all that stuff about the pipe, useful information though. Kunifer I have used before and is fine.  When I asked for Kunifer this time they gave me copper.  All Brake pipe sold in the UK has to meet a British or ISO spec of some kind.  The stuff I bought just like Kunifer has been tested to 8000psi.  Now I am almost ready for a re-test I'll let you know if the testers have any comment.  One thing though, I wish the US & UK would use the same type of flare nuts!

Cheers guys

Ian...
