gear shift cable length for 22' winnie

i purchased a 102" long cable for 22' winnie (1971).....got it installed.....but when adjusting at tranny end popped cable out of dash gear/broke lil prongs....so remounted with zip ties in x pattern (as read on the forum....) but the cable is too long at the tranny end......did i buy the wrong length of cable or did i stretch it out or adjust it wrong or?   can someone with a similar size rig tell me what length cable should be.....
