Noise up front - Maybe a bearing?

Hello,

Yesterday I finally got my 89 Fleetwood Bounder running and I noticed when I turn I hear a knocking sound. I'm assuming that it's probably a ball bearing. Does anyone have suggestions on which products I need to buy to get that fixed?

Or suggestions on what it is if it's not a bearing?

Hi Just a tip. After installing urethane bushings on my swaybar (Chev P30) type chassis I developed a knocking sound going around bends and over driveway drops . I checked complete frt end for looseness/ play, all was ok, so I just lived with the noise  Suddenly the noise was no longer there ?  On my next inspection I found the R/S sway bar bracket on the r/s A frame had broken and the sway bar was not tied down on 1 side  I replaced the bracket and viola the noise returned , It comes from the hardness of the urethane bushings I believe as I never had it with the rubber bushings So I just live with it !  Frank

I think Frank is on the right path with this, normally if a wheel bearing is going bad it's going to squeal like a pig or chirp long before there is any movement, jack up the front end and start checking and moving things, could also be a bad shock bushing

Gotcha, thanks for the heads up!!

To me it sounds a lot like a CV joint that went bad on an old toyota camry of mine.

How do I check the shock bushing?

If it is a knock, knock, knock, once every tire rotation then it is a bad or missing slack adjuster on the disc brake caliper. Every time a high spot comes around on the rotor it smacks the caliper against the caliper bracket. These are the slide in keys that you have to bang in with a hammer from the side and then secure with a allen head screw from the top of the caliper. There is one per caliper.

Rick, yes it is a knock, knock, knock. I believe I need new brakes as well since they squeak. If I take it to get the brakes re-done do you think this issue would be fixed as well?

Please pardon my ignorance as I'm not sure if this is something that would be done in a routine brake job... Thanks for your help!

Technically they should replace the brake hardware when they do the brakes, I did when I had my business. The problem is today's shops are all about the dollar so a lot of them will not if they think they can get away with it. If you have an old time mechanic that knows his stuff then you have nothing to worry about but otherwise be sure to tell them you want all new brake hardware kits installed.

Is there a brake kit that you guys suggest buying? Or, would most p30 kits be good?

I used the Duralast H5529 from Autozone. One kit does both sides. If you have rear disc brakes, it's the same kit for that as well.

Isn't it ironic? I tell people what it needs, how to fix it and I even have the parts for mine and yet mine still goes click, click, click once it gets hot because I have been too damn lazy to do my own vehicle! I need to get that done this week before I forget it again!!!

Yes there is, and the mechanics cars are in the worst repair.

and body and fender guys cars have rotted out holes you can throw a cat through!

Yea, I have them too in my 96 Powerstroke. And yes, I also do bodywork. Restoration grade at that.
