Generator on my 89 Chieftain

The generator starts up okay but while it's running I can hear a clicking sound behind the dash. It sounds like a relay is clicking. After about 30 seconds, the generator shuts down.  Any ideas what's going on?

There is usually an hour meter on the dash and that will click but it is pretty quiet. That would not have anything to do with the generator shutting down though, it is just the meter running. Is your oil full? fuel filter clean? Gas tank in vehicle over a quarter tank?
