Removed starter and had it rebuilt with new solenoid. Reinstalled starter and still has problem. Removed and replaced relay mounted on frame and still has problem. I have to remove the battery cables to get it to stop cranking over and then can reattach them and it acts normally until I turn the key and then it cranks continuously again. Aside from the ignition can anyone think of what else might cause this problem before I tear apart the column? This is on a 1975 Brave with a 318. Thanks, D&R

Question becomes one of is it the starter, starter solinoid, starter relay, or ignition switch.  I would first jumper from BAT to SOL terminal on starter relay.  If the problem is there when you do this it's in the starter/solinoid.  If that is ok, then jumper between BAT and pin 1 (START wire from ignition switch) on starter relay.  Make sure tranny is in Park when you do this.  If problem is there, then starter relay is sticking.  Only thing left is the ignition switch and wiring.

An easy way to test it without pulling the colom switch out would be to unplug the harness at the bottom of the colum and jump the wires at the live end of the plug - then test back to the switch side with continuity tester / volt meter . .Sea Hag

Thanks for the replies, Finally found the problem, when I originally took the took the starter in for this problem they rebuilt it and said it tested good, but they did not test the secondary stage as it never goes bad. Mine of course was the first to go bad. So if you encounter this problem before you replace your relays, test your batteries and tear into the ignition make sure they test the starter fully as this advice would of saved me alot of time and aggravation. Thanks again, D&R

could be multiple of things, these include:

1) gear reduction set up  not  properly disengaging.
2) ignition switch blown out  or sticking (stuck in start mode)

at least it starts right up...
don't get down.
