I read it somewhere before, and I've searched endlessly. What are the large black near the roof on the front and rear of the outside body of my 72 Indian?

Thanks,

John

They are the member numbers for the WIT (Winnebago International Travelers) Club.  I believe someone in the group has an old member roster and may be able to shed some light on who owned the MH when they were members of the club.

I am the one with the Winnebago International Travellers Members Handbook and Reference Guide. If your rig was made before 1978, I should be able to tell you who the registered member was (as of 1978).
I'll just need the numbers.

Sorry,
I just thought to look in your photo album and got the number from one of your pics.

W.I.T. #  06793

Registered to:  Don M. Clark

W.I.T. numbers were assigned to a person when they joined the club. That number remained thiers for as long as they were members. If they sold one rig and purchased another, they had to put the same number on the new one. This is why you sometimes see a newer rig with a lower membership number than an older rig.
ie; My rig is a '76 model and my number is 02528, but your '72 model has a higher number (06793). This was because the original owner of mine had joined earlier than yours, and kept the same number he always had.
Also, the "official" member number always proceeded with a "W", but that wasn't put on the rigs though. ex: "W-06793" would have been the actual membership number.

Hope this helps you trace your rigs history. It appears that yours has remained in the Great Lakes area all of it's life. You might even get lucky and be able to track your rigs original owner down.

Thank you very much. It's really important to me to know these kinds of things as we continue in our restoration. Is there still a WIT club? Would it be wrong to either remove or keep these numbers when we paint the rig?

Regards,

John

Someday I will have to repaint my Winnie, and will then have to decide whether to keep the existing numbers or paint over them. The Winnebago International Travelers Club has sort of transformed into the Winnebago Itasca Club -. I don't think they use the numbers on the coach anymore, and most of the owners now of course have rigs only a few years old.

Denison is correct, the original W.I.T. no longer exists, while most members do keep the original numbers on the rigs, for nostalgia reasons, there is no "requirement" to do so.
