M4 = M400 chassis however for 69-73 that is actually reffered to as an M375
9 = Incomplete Motor home Chassis
C = 10,001 - 14,000 GVW
N = 413-1

You didn't provide them however:
6th digit is chassis year 2 = 1972, 3 = 1973
7th digit is Dodge Assembly plant
8th - 13th digit is assembly no.

Hey, if you have a 72, then you 99.8% chance you have a 413 Dodge.  Denison, dont you agree?  I dont have the VIN decoder, SeaHag can do that too.  Talk to you all laterz.

Certainly it would be a 413 in a Chieftain, which was a model with the optional stuff. In a 72 brave the 318-3 was standard, the 413-1 optional. Assuming its the original engine.
If the distributor is at the front passenger side of the engine, it is a 413 or a replacement 440. And the exhaust manifolds on the 413 came out below the spark plugs, those on the 440 came out above the spark plugs, 99.99% of the time.
