Transmission slip

  Noticed a small problem today on my way home from my favorite camping ground.  I had just crossed the single lane steel bridge, and was coming off of the second single lane steel bridge up the hill and around the corner.  (Ha, ha.)  I was climbing the curved hill and was about  to the top when the MH shifted from 2nd to 3rd.  It had shifted from 1st to 2nd just fine, but when it went to go into 3rd the rpm's went up and it didn't seem to grab.  So I let off the throttle, I wasn't even in it hard because the hill goes up through a sharp left turn, and it went right into 3rd gear.  Does this sound like the tranny is going to give out?  Or does it need a new filter?  Or does it need rebuilt?  Or am I just worrying about something minor?  It may have done it once or twice in the past but thats about it.  I checked the fluid, its full and it isn't burnt.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
     Oh yeah its a good old bullet-proof 727, coupled to a "Mighty" 318.

I seem to recall a time when I once experienced a similar situation, on a upgrade, in a turn. Perhaps this is an intermittent glitch that is only present under certain conditions.

In my 25 years of experience driving Chrysler stuff I have only had to rebuild one of my transmissions. That particular one started to show its first signs of trouble by not wanting to shift into third when cold. I have also been told that no reverse or slippage in reverse is a common first sign. They say this is because reverse requires more fluid pressure.

If you have to go the rebuild route consider installing a shift kit. Trans-Go was once the brand my transmission man preferred. They had a Tow-Go, for RV's and towing and a Competition model. The shift kit gives more positive shifts and results in less wear on the unit. I had the Competition kit in a 72 Fury 440 cop car that would make it scratch and used the Tow-Go in a more mundane 1975 Fury 318, the one I had to rebuild.

Years ago a 727 rebuild was around $350 and the shift kit, installed was anywear from $75 to $100.

Most transmission shops offer a free road test, if you have a reputable shop in your area you could have then check it out. If they aren't reputable......well you might be buying something you don't need.

I hope all is okay with your transmission and you can use the money for gas instead of repairs!

       My brothe
r-in-law had an old plymouth once . the tranny was not shifting right and it was slipping . Since I had always been more familiar with GM tranny's I told him it was junk . As a last resort before removing it we changed the filter and fluid . It ran like a new one . The filters are made of a fine material and plug easily .

Hi.
Nice info Cousin Eddie. I was not going to put the shift kit in mine till I read that. I had just dropped my trannie off at the rebuilders. Current Denver price for a cash and carry rebuild is 650 with the shift kit and a new torque converter. (torque flight 727)
My c6 trannie would slip on turns when it was low on fliud.

Not sure, but it may have to do with the fact that you drive 80MPH and have a 21 Gallon (?!?!) hot water heater (hehe). I think the girls in the hot tub may be what is giving you that lurching sensation on the corners rather than the transmission :)

     I've only done 80 mph once or twice, and that was by mistake.  And I drain the water heater every time I leave the campground.  Oh, and the women in the hot tub never run out of hot water. (ha, ha, ha.)

I had the same issue when ever turning and found out last night that the level of transmission fluid in the tranny was 2.5 quarts low... I don't know how it got that low, but it has been sitting a lot over the past 3 years... I see no drips, but it was low... I'll be checking the level over the next few weeks to see if it was a fluke or not.  I get no more slips now.  Hope that helps some.
