Hello All,
Does anyone know if it's normal for the inverter? converter? which changes 120v ac to 12dc to buzz all of the time? It's located under the bed and it is quite annoying to the point I unplug the shore power at night. I'm mostly concerned if it's safe. The MH is a 1973 Winnebago 21' Dodge chassis. The unit in question is stock to the MH.
Thanks
Mark

That noise is normal. It's the converters' transformers making the noise.
Question is, how loud is the buzz? Hm?

Not super loud. I can hear it through the mattress if that's any indication! I'm glad to hear that it's normal.
Thanks

That you can hear it through mattress is normal given the thinness of the boards and mattress.  Mine is under the foot of my bed in the corner close to the passenger side wall.

You could always change it out for a new, modern, more efficient model for about $150.  It would do away with that noise.

Thanks! Is there anything inherently wrong with the old school one other than noise?

I think I will invest in a new one. Silence is golden! (in the woods that is)

Pretty darned amazing that a piece of electrical 40 years old still functions, isn't it?  I actually don't know of many people who've had them go bad yet.  They just replaced them with newer for a few good reasons, the "buzzing" noise being one of them (that was kinda my goodnight lullaby in my '74) and to have one that recharges the batteries while plugged in to shore power, better efficiency...

If you use the message search, you'l find there are already a ton of great recommendations to take a look at!

My 75 brave does not buzz loud enough to here it through the plywood. something is wrong with that.
take off the lid and make sure something has not come loose and is causing the vibration to be louder.

I have a very very little vibration but no possible way to hear it at night...
Hope this helps.

Hi Guys,  That buzzing noise is more than just buzzing of the transformer. It also emits an electro-magnetic frequency of 60 cps or ELF (extra low frequency). Basically unprotected radio waves that effect humans in a negative way. It's best to change to something newer, solid state & get rid of that incredibly heavy & noisy transformer. For more info on ELF try looking up Nicola Tesla's reports on frequencies & their effect on humans. The GOV & MK ULTRA know ALL about this stuff. One should sleep as far away from anything electrical as it affects your brainwaves & sleep quality. All for now C YA! GONMAD

Damn.  All these years, we've been taught that elfs are good..

Not sure which model of converter you have but it sounds like you have a ferro-resonant style which were popular in the early 70's.  My understanding is that they can be very noisy.

Dan, mine is charging my coach batteries at a rate of 12.1 volts per the manual description and when I test the battery terminals when plugged in. Was told this isn't even adequate for a float charge. Did you change to a new one? If so can you provide a link?

This is what I have:

http://www.progressivedyn.com/rv_converter_pd9260c_2.html

It works very well, don't ever hear it, and was a snap to install.  Keeps my coach battery well fed.  It is available from several sources including Amazon, eBay, and just about every rv dealership.

Great, thanks!  Much better voltage output..

Yes they cook batteries and really do not have a charge circuit.

The PD converters are nice. I use 2 of the 60s one for house batteries and one for the start battery. I only installed one for the start battery to always keep it charged before I had solar. It will also act like a altenator if mine dies on a trip,  I can just start the gen and turn on the ft converter :)

I will have to keep that one in mind in case of an emergency...
