Adjusting Holley 2brl

I couldn't find anything comparable in the message search, so here goes: I put on a new Holley 2 barrel carb on my D19/318 2 summers ago, and it works fine. But I notice a lot of black smoke coming from the exhaust and on the ground. I had a mechanic supposedly adjust it, but it still puts out the smoke. Does anyone know which screw I turn to lean it out? With gas prices as they are, I cant't afford to be running at less than optimal mixture. Thanks for any replies.
