Argh! I have messed up changing my distributor cap.  I know the 413 firing order is 18436572 and the distributor rotates counterclockwise.

But without removing plug 1 and bumping it to the top of the comp stroke. etc - where should distributor plug wire 1 be relative to the front of engine [12 o'clock]?  Mine is at 1:30 o'clock.

It runs lousy.... and has backfired flame thru the carb  i??

OK, just found Dave big thread and 1:30 o'clock looks OK - so?  I put on new plugs, cap and rotor the wires are only 10 years old.
Now what??

You are setting up with timing mark on harmonic damper set to TOC and according to this correct?  Dave

Are you saying it still backfires through carb?
Points adjusted correctly?
If so did you set timing with a timing light (5deg BTDC)?
Vacuum leak (old hose)?
Vacuum advance working?

Backfire thru carb is caused by plug fireing wile intake valve is open  Crossed wire wrong sequence carbon track inside dist cap  etc. Go back to beginning and do it all over again  Frank
