Which end of cable do I adjust gas throttle cable?

Hi there,

The more I snoop around the more I find wrong.  I honestly don't think the 4 barrels have ever opened in 78K on this RV. I've had it 12 years and never heard them open.

When I hold down the gas pedal by hand and engine off, and look at the linkage on carb the movement on the carb just barely gets to the point where it touches the part that causes the back secondaries to open.

When I operate the linkage at carb itself the secondary barrels open OK!  In other words the Go Pedal bottoms-out; ie, , HITS the FLOOR !, PEDAL TO THE METAL !,  before it affects the Carb.

It looks like I need about another 1/2" of PULL to get secondary butterflies to OPEN up.

Do I do this at the carb or behind the gas pedal?

Any tips would be appreciated.

Making progress.

Be nice to here what they sound like.

Most of these cables are not adjustable but the ones that are are adjusted at the carburetor end. It is possible that the cable is stretched or is getting ready to break. Does it move smoothly when disconnected from the carb? Are you sure there is no carpet or other obstruction under the pedal. Is the pedal linkage bent?

lngfish

Nothing under carpet. I will look to see if something is bent. Thanks for the ideas. This is nothing new. It never sounded like the 4 barrels opened up since I have driven it, about 25K.

It seems to move smoothly connected so I assume it would move smoothly also if disconnected too. But I will look into this. Thanks.

I will check your ideas, thanks.

Operator Error, ME!

This is funnie!

I had my Grand Daughter help me here, with the engine off of course.  I had been using my left hand before and had been looking at the carb before and even showed her the big butterfly valves, the secondaries.  Anwyway, as I mentioned they were not opening.  Well I put her in the seat and had her mash the petal.  Holy somkes, I saw her use her TOE and FOOT!  LOL  She is 9.

I had never like used my TOE TOO!

When she mashed the petal with her "right foot and toe" the linkage worked perfectly!

You can even learn from somebody who has never driven!

Problem never existed!

When I test drove it, after a few vacuum hoses cracks fixed and a bunch replaced; (used 6 feet), I used right foot and TOE, and could hear the sound of secondaries. Not real loud but apparent. A first in 12 years I might add! It really didn't add allot of acceleration so I guess I wasn't missing much except burning allot of gas! But it is nice sound to know the are there if needed.

Keep in mind that with a quadrajet the secondary manual butterfly valves open manually BUT the large air valves on top that you are looking at when you down at the top of the carb will only open as the need for air is increased. This eliminate the massive bog you would get if you lust opened that giant hole and the vacuum dropped to zero all at once. As the rpm comes up and the engine calls for more air and fuel then the air valve will open and THEN you will hear some serous secondary sound. Ans see some serious drop in the gas gauge!

OK, Yes, I saw the upper butterflies that are operated by the solenoid with an adjustment on it. They are huge.

I turned the vacuum solenoid screw one way then the other way since I did not know what I doing and the screw didn't fall out so I figured OK to do.  Did that back before they worked.  Back in the days before I knew how to use the pedal.

How is that adjustment made if you wanted to make a proper adjustment to it? I ran it full one way, which way who knows. CW or CCW. What ever way I ran the screw it worked. Good guess?

I understand what you mean. No serious 4-barrel till the air flow and RPM's are up or you flood it out and it BOGS down. Makes sense. It didn't bog down at all when I did it. Worked OK. I only did it 5-10 seconds to hear it anyway. No need to watch needle to Left.

Even the dog's ears perked up.

Yes the Journey is the FUN! Good point

Thanks

Just so you know, it does not flood out, it leans out. I am not exactly sure what screw you moved since the air valves are not solenoid operated.

Only solenoid I've seen on a quad is fast idle when the air is turned on.

Yup, yup.

I think he is just talking about adjusting the spring where the vacuum pull off is that controls how fast the flys open.  You can loosen it and the flys will open quick and full or tighen it and they will open slow and when needed with airflow or too tight and not open at all.

Cook,

That is correct that is the one I was referring to.

It has something to do with the upper butterflies for the secondaries.

I understand what you explained. THANKS.

Sorry I was away busy for a few days, thanks for inputs!
