Sounds like a reallllly important part!  What does it limit voltage to? The mechanically challenged Sob.

the voltage limeter is mounted on the back of the dash board . It limits voltage and supplies a constant voltage to sensitive gauges on the dash ( water Temp, Fuel gauge and possibly oil gauge . the gauages are hooked up in series after the limiter - Sea Hag

It limits/regulates the supplied voltage to the fuel gauge and the water temperature gauge. The limiter works like an on-off switch cycling once per second. Its -on/off- duration provides an Average reference voltage that is relatively accurate. denison

Voltage Limiters prevent the voltage rising above:

10 volts for most 12 volt systems.

5 volts for most 6 volt systems.

But there are some funnies.
