Starting on a task to replace the valve cover gaskets.  Any tips to make this easier?

You are going need to clean them..I sand blasted mine..or some sort of spray on cleaner..

Run a tap down each thread hole for the bolts..Blow out the hole with compressed air..

Some say put sealant on both sides of the gasket..I don't do that..Just the side towards the cover..So when you need to lift the cover off again, it won't destroy the gasket..

Maybe a stud nut kit...

Retorque the rocker arm shaft bolts..Make sure that there are no bent pushrods..

You will need to remove the sparkplug wire off the plugs to lift the cover off..Check the boots for damage or burning from the hot exhaust manifold..

That is all I can think of..

I agree with RM above. Also, before you start the engine, give them time to conform to the the round, rough cast surface of the heads (I would wait overnight.) The first time, I didn't wait, and oil poured out from under the gaskets. Use valve cover tabs, they may need some customizing. Tighten them by hand first, wait a while for the gaskets to compress, then tighten them a little more. Torque wrench is pretty useless (maybe an inch/lb one will work), just hold the ratchet right over the socket and use your wrist, not the handle.

Got it done.  Took my time.  Waited overnight to crank her up.  So far, so good.  Thanks for the advice.
